“Damn it, man, mind the bumps! I don’t want this thing getting stuck.”
“Sorry, your Lordship.”
Connie’s long, cool fingers closed over Clifford’s hand. “Calm down,
darling. He’s doing his best.”
“Is that so? It seems to me he’s deliberately rolling us over every
tussock – damn it all, Mellors!”
Struggling to push the tiny motorcar uphill, Mellors simply grunted.
Clifford listened to the man’s labored breaths and ground his teeth
in impotent wrath. He was no fool, far from it in point of fact, and
if the two of them wanted to play at Adam and Eve, that was their affair.
What cut was Mellors’ stony silence, as if that brief, shockingly
blissful period before the war had never happened, as if the two
of them had never clung together on sweltering summer nights in
the hut, bodies slippery with sweat; as if they’d never disported
themselves in the cool shadows of Wragby, as if Mellors’ hot, sweet
mouth had never worshiped Clifford’s manhood with a skill no woman
had ever been able to achieve.
Do yer like me then, yer Lordship?
He’d answer this time, if Mellors asked. He’d take back all those lofty
little taunts, every instance he’d pulled away when Mellors had inched
forward – but Mellors never asked again. Those eyes, green as a summer
lake, never met Clifford’s now.
Abruptly, Clifford snatched his hand from beneath Connie’s gentle touch.
End.

Date: 2010-04-01 03:19 am (UTC)It seems to me he’s deliberately rolling us over every tussock I think Sir Clifford is right there; Mellors would be like that, I bet.
The way Clifford's bitterness shines through every word, made me really feel for him for the first time. Love it!

Date: 2010-04-01 03:23 am (UTC)Heh. I could definitely see Mellors nursing a grudge and digging at Clifford that way.
I'm happy that Clifford's bitterness was apparent, and that you felt for him. Thank you for the wonderful feedback!

Oh god... *swoons*
And I feel for Mellors too, how he sought out Clifford's affection (the way he does now with Connie) and it wasn't answered, and that it still stings. (Or, that's how I choose to see it *g*)
Thank you!

Date: 2010-04-02 09:04 am (UTC)Good to know Clifford will spend the rest of his days dreaming of Mellors - just like the rest of us! Imagine turning down such an opportunity? Lovely, well written piece.
