Even before Sharpe opened his eyes he knew he was in the infirmary; he heard the cries of the wounded, smelled the odors of blood and laudanum, felt canvas beneath his naked body, and rough linen and wool atop it. His head throbbed, his shoulder was in agony, and his knee was singing Rare Willie. Without knowing exactly how, he was aware that someone was staring at him. He longed to drift off to sleep, but discomfort forced his eyes open.

There was Wellington, looking down that nose of his. He stood patiently, as if he had been waiting a long time. He seemed prepared to wait longer. Behind him was Pat, grinning from ear to ear.

"You rescued the colours, Sharpe." Wellington set a tattered, scorched, but neatly folded bundle of cloth on Sharpe's cot. "You have my thanks."

Sharpe opened his mouth to reply and was horrified to hear himself moan.

Wellington turned to Harper. "See to him, Sergeant." He strode away without awaiting a reply.

Harper sank to his knees beside Sharpe's cot. He touched the flag with gentleness, then rested an even gentler hand on Sharpe's forehead. "Well done, sir."

Sharpe closed his eyes, and slept.

Very atmospheric scene, with a strong sense of Sharpe surfacing from unconciousness, first through hearing and smell, dragged further up reluctantly and only truly able to relax, when he knows his chosen man is near. thanks for posting.
