No, you're right - you pretty much had aspirin or opiates. And no antibiotics, aaaagh! If you got a bad infection you were pretty much screwed. :(
Jamie's parents do love him, I figure, but sort of distantly. And Jamie probably wouldn't have called his mother mummy if he weren't medicated, but I think there's at least a part of him that's touch-starved and needy.

It felt so good to have them together again, even if, as you say, they're going to have to cope with the real world. After so much time spent apart, they're very ready to be together, but it's not going to be a cakewalk....
