He was flying.

There would be pain eventually - he was sure of it. He’d felt it for a minute, perhaps more: blinding, white-hot agony clawing into every fiber of his body, agony so intense he couldn’t even scream. The sky had been so blue and calm. He’d heard a deep groaning

(himself? or the burning array?)

and there had been a rush of fire, another flare of anguish, and then he’d heard an oddly familiar voice

Alec... Alec....

and felt the touch of fingertips on his cheek.

He’d frowned (where had he heard that voice before?)

and then

drifted

and remembered nothing else until just a few moments ago. Warmth and benevolence flooded his body. The pain would return, but for now, nothing. Sweet oblivion.

Feels marvelous

Sunshine from the window made a patch of brightness on the white blankets on his bed, the blankets he could see only by moving his eyes. His vision was a blur. He couldn’t move his head, nor his limbs. He was locked into some sort of metal frame

Didn’t know you were such a kinky bastard, James

but he felt no pain whatsoever. He closed his eyes.

Really marvelous.

“Как поживаете?” How are you feeling?

“Спасибо, хорошо.” Fine, thanks. He froze. “Who’s that?” he whispered. In English, to clarify things. Russian was for...thinking.

“Your back is broken.” The voice was Russian, faintly graveled, tinged with rueful good humor. “Also both legs, your right shoulder, both hands, your left heel is shattered...need I go on?”

“If you like.” He squinted, trying to give form to the dark blur blotting out the sunshine.

“Never mind. Too much to enumerate. The good news is that there is no permanent spinal damage. A miracle. Perhaps you have been touched by God, my friend.” Something was put between his lips. A drinking straw. “Drink,” the voice commanded. “Slowly.”

Gratefully, he sipped. Cool water trickled down his parched throat. “Do I know you? Your voice....”

There was a soft laugh. “How swiftly you’ve forgotten me.” The blur moved.

Alec blinked through his morphine haze. The face before him swam from obfuscation to clarity. He saw grey-blue eyes, a lean, watchful face. “Kolyushenka.”

“So you haven’t forgotten.”

“How...did you find me?”

“Long story.”

Alec tried to smile. Never a word wasted. “Came back for me?”

Nikolai brushed Alec’s cheek. “I owe you a favor.”

“I’m going to...kill him, Kolyushenka.”

“Not today, my friend. Sleep now.”

Wearily, obediently, Alec closed his eyes.

End.

Wow, great stuff. You definitely had me gripped from start to finish. Amazing! I like the ending. Here is ground for new stories. :o)

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-15 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Glad you liked it. :)

What inherent improbability?! Nyet! I will not believe it! ^_^

Also, I love this. Not only the overall story, but the play with form, mimicking how Alec drifts and comes back to himself. Fantastic.

Also, OMG, thank you for the squirrels! Eeeeee! *hugs*

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-15 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Yknow, I was stunned that he even opened his eyes, falling from that height. Good lord. Of course, it's a Bond movie, so why shouldn't I take that sort of leap, right?

I'm glad you liked it, and the form!

You're welcome! *hug*

This...you...are made of so much win it hurts :) You had me bouncing in my seat with happiness from the end of the first line when I realized just *what* the feat you managed was. Sequel, please?...*puppy eyes*

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-15 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very, very much! What a lovely thing to say. :D Who knows, there may be room for a sequel. Thanks again!

Ooh, what a delicious pairing! I could just see Nik with that silent, subtle tenderness taking care of Alec.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-15 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely a tantalizing idea to me, too. I'm so glad you enjoyed it - thank you!

[identity profile] kimberlite.livejournal.com 2010-03-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm torn between OUCH and AWWWW. ;) Lovely writing, and now there's hope for more of these two!

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
You may not remember this, but one of the most LOLarious parts of Goldeneye is the bit where Alec falls like 800 feet [that's what it looks like, anyway] onto bare concrete, and not only does his brainpan not shatter upon impact, he opens his eyes and moans in pain. Then the burning radio array comes crashing down on him. You don't see him die, so I'm going with it. :D I'm glad you liked it! Thanks, sweetie. :)

[identity profile] kimberlite.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I totally remember because you snarked about it once when we were chatting. ;)

Thanks for the squirrels -- you are completely correct in your assessment...

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always bitching about something. :D

You're welcome. Heh. *nod*

[identity profile] hurinhouse.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
oh now this is niiice and i would love to read more of it. nikolai's voice is spot on, especially "long story." the delirium you have alec swimming in and out of - so well written - i couldn't feel any pain, but definitely the sweet haze of drugs, lol.

is there more planned?

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I'm so pleased you liked the voice and Alec's haze. I don't have any immediately planned, but I think Alec and Nikolai are an absolutely splendid pairing, so I would love to revisit them now and again.

[identity profile] hurinhouse.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
i meant to add: i can just see nikolai helping alec to exact revenge, a long slow guidance to do it right, rather than alec's probable head-on attack.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I can see that too. Nikolai has the patience of water on stone. :)

[identity profile] mrkinch.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
*shivers* Hadda look up the title, but oh, yeah. Nikolai is the perfect complement for Alec.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I agree. :)

[identity profile] govi20.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Squeeeeeeee! What a great, great fic! I love the build-up, the pairing and of course Alec didn't die and of course Nikolai comes to take xcare of him. Awesome dear, absolutely awesome! Thank you for sending me virtual Sean and Vig btw! *hugs*

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad you liked it! Of course he didn't die - it's a Bond movie. Nobody dies. :D Thank you so much, sweetie, and you're very welcome. *hug*

[identity profile] ms-ivory.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
What a wonderful story to wake up to (slept in today *grins*). Very powerful pairing, I love to see that even though every bone in Alec's body is broken his spirit isn't.

“I’m going to...kill him, Kolyushenka.” Chilling and great line!

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucky you, sleeping in. :D You're right - it's extremely difficult to crush Alec's spirit. Thank you very, very much indeed!

[identity profile] mooms.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
What inherent improbablity? I am sure that this is what happened.:D

I love the idea of Alec and Nikolai together and I loved Nikolai's voice in this. Great idea, beautifully executed! Thank you.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I can't help it, the thought of it always makes me giggle. HE'S ALIVE!! How in the name of all that's green on this good earth did he survive? Well, never mind it. I'm so pleased you liked it! Thank you so much. :D

[identity profile] peersrogue.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That was too good for words. Alec is far too special to leave him crushed under a satellite dish. Thrills and chills just thinking about a Nicolai/Alec pairing. Thank you.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree - he's far too special indeed! Thank you for your kind words - I'm glad you liked the piece.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it, I like him, I like them.:-)

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-16 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad - thank you. :)

[identity profile] foxrafer.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I just love this. And I say more improbable things have happened in a Bond film so why not. This is such a wonderful pairing; the other story you wrote of these two is a perfect complement (maybe not intended but it is in my brain). Thanks for sharing this.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm so glad, thank you! I love the pairing too - I did intend it as a sort of followup to my other story, but it wasn't necessary to read it so I didn't point it out. But I'm glad you picked up on it!

And I totally agree that more improbable things have happened in Bond films. :D

[identity profile] emma5m.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This was so good and I guess I shouldn't be surprised since it's you, but I'm still amazed. How you, just like Nikolai, manage to say so much with just a few words. The tension between Nikolai and Alec is so great and you portrait it beautifully in all your Nikolai/Alec fics. One more thing, LOVE you! for letting Alec against all odds survive Goldeneye

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I am absolutely delighted that you enjoyed it! Thank you very much for saying so. And I only did what SHOULD have happened, don't you think? Alec can't die! :) Thanks again.

[identity profile] ingrid44.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, interesting beginning. The title tells it all, doesn't it. Alex drifting and awakening, trying to plot his next move - all while tied to a frame, and downing pain killers. To sleep is to bring surcease from the pain. *hugs*

Yes, that's exactly what I wanted! Thanks for your thoughtful comments. :)

Love it! I want to believe that this is actually the end of Goldeneye. The true ending is just too sad for me and such a waste. Love the tenderness in this story, well actually I just love the whole thing. Thank you :)

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! I wish that had been the ending too. :)
