Dick stood half-hidden in the shadows of the sagging brick and stone of Pinfold Lane, keeping an eye on the toff who wobbled back and forth, waving a coin in his hand and grinning like a right idiot. Fellows were all the same in their cups, when you got right down to it.

“Here now, lad." The toff reached out, groping unsuccessfully after Dick’s wrist. “How old are you, boy?”

“None of your bloody business,” Dick snapped, deftly evading the questing paw. “How old are you?”

“Old enough to be your father, I’ll warrant.” The man’s voice grew more urgent. “Come here and let me have a look at you. Come on, don’t be shy. No point in being shy, lad.”

Dick stepped out of the filth-slicked alleyway and allowed the man to maneuver him beneath the street lamp. He squinted at the man’s satin waistcoat, lavishly embroidered with silver, and wrinkled his nose at the odors of snuff and stale perfume. “I ain’t lettin’ yer put it up me, so don’t even ask.”

“That’s not what I want.” The man stared at Dick, swaying. “What pretty green eyes. Lovely...mouth.”

Sighing, Dick led the toff back down the alleyway.

Oh my. I especially like Dick's impatience and anger, and the way it bleeds through here. This was quite a fascinating scene.

Oh wow. I just love your use of language, it just takes me right there into the scene. Filthy man, get your paws off my Dick!

Hee! Thank you so much!! I'm glad the language worked. Skeezeball guy... :D

Ooh, very nice. :) And I may have had a tiny Curt moment which got me thinking about reincarnation or time travel or immortals...

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG Vince, now you have me thinking of a VG/Sharpe xover cowrite!

[identity profile] kimberlite.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Eee! Then I'd better get my act together and watch Sharpe. Maybe a summer project... ;)

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh this is such a telling glimpse into his early life! Such a vivid picture!

*sigh*

i love this. i love his defiance, his resignation, and the sad feeling that acceptance long ago washed away any hesitation.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much - I really tried to capture exactly that. :)

Another fantastic one, raw and so very, very vivid. A wonderful portrayal of young Sharpe. Grand job.

Thank you so, so much, dearest!

Hogarth's world

[identity profile] peersrogue.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 08:49 am (UTC)(link)

A world of depravity and poverty sketched with such a few sentences. One can feel and smell the dirt and despair. Excellent.

Oh, I never thought of Hogarth, but you're right, that's really the same environment. I'm honored by the comparison - thank you!

such a 'profession' has to be humiliating enough as it is, and then there's the idiots (sharpe's word) one would have to put up with. doubly so as we know what his mother was. i can just feel his seething. such rage. it never entirely goes away, does it?

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Seething is a great word, and I can imagine it never going away. I wonder if Bernard Cornwell ever imagined Sharpe following in his mother's footsteps. [probably not] Thanks so much for your comments, helena.

I think the resignation kills me the most. This is such a strong piece, very vivid.

[identity profile] splix.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! The mood is very resigned.
