Luzhin Three-Alpha walked with the easy, swinging stride of a movie gunslinger, but his smile was wide and innocent and full of optimism. “Hi, Dr. Merrick.”
“Hello, Three-Alpha. Please sit.” Merrick held out a glass brimming with cold pink juice. “Your favorite.”
“Thanks.” Three-Alpha drank thirstily and set the glass on the desk. “It’s so nice here. Quiet.”
“Is it too loud in Sector Two?”
Three-Alpha hesitated. For a split second his eyes were cautious, assessing. Merrick waited patiently.
“Not usually.” The smile shone out again, a most apparent desire to please.
“Good. Very good.”
Very few of the agnates developed any sort of sophisticated thinking, and most lacked filters; their emotions were completely transparent. Humans were different. Nikolai Luzhin had learned, through a lifetime of practice and a wealth of experience, to shield all but the strongest emotions. Merrick had observed his unease, but it was not unexpected. Even a hardened FSB agent wasn’t immune to the sight of his own clone.
Business was growing at an extremely satisfying rate. Merrick was almost ready to move into the private sector. There were thousands of potential clients with enough wealth, fear, and vanity to fund Merrick Biotech for the next two hundred years. Heads of state, captains of industry, film actors, fashion models, successful physicians and lawyers, sports stars – the vistas of possibility were endless. They would be more delicate, though, more squeamish than his present clients. The time was coming when sponsors would have to remain ignorant of the agnates’ consciousness. Soon. Very soon.
“I suppose you know why you’re here, Three-Alpha.”
Three-Alpha shifted uncomfortably in his chair. “Um...”
“It’s all right.” Merrick smiled, conveying as much reassurance as he could. “You’re not going to be punished for anything. I’m merely concerned about you, that’s all. You’ve had four proximity violations in fifteen days. It is rather serious.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry. I only want you to help me understand, so that I can help you.” Merrick looked at Three-Alpha’s file and sighed. “And all with Parrish Two-Bravo. You feel some sort of special connection with him, don’t you?”
“He’s been really nice to me since I arrived here,” Three-Alpha said. “He showed me around, and helped me when I started working – oh.” His eyes clouded. “Did they separate us at work because of the proximity violations? That was my fault, I didn’t mean to –"
“No, I know you didn’t. But everyone must follow the rules here, you know. Tell me, does he make you feel...unusual in any way?”
Two bright spots of color appeared on Three-Alpha’s cheeks. He drank the last of his juice, looked down at his shoetops, and mumbled, “I don’t know what you mean.”
“It’s all right. It’s perfectly natural, you know.”
Three-Alpha raised his eyes shyly. “I wish I could tell him that, Dr. Merrick. I wish you’d let me tell him about our conversations.” He yawned hugely. “Sorry.”
“I’m not boring you, am I?” Merrick smiled.
“No, I’m just sleepy.”
“That’s not surprising. It’s almost bedtime. I’m a little tired myself.” Merrick rose to his feet, shrugged out of his jacket, slinging it over the chair. He walked around the desk, close to Three-Alpha, and leaned against it. “Parrish has his own doctor. You know it’s simply not ethical to discuss what you see and hear and say within these walls. He knows that too. That’s much more serious than a proximity violation. Much more.” He let the unspoken threat hang in the air.
“I know that,” Three-Alpha said unhappily. “It’s just...he’s my best friend.” He looked up into Merrick’s eyes and frowned. “When I see him, I want to...he’s...” He yawned again, and his eyelids fluttered.
“Good gracious.” Merrick chuckled and put a hand under Three-Alpha’s elbow, helping him up. “I think you’d better rest a bit.” He steered the agnate toward the couch, supporting him when his knees buckled. “Steady there. Steady.” He lowered Three-Alpha to the long, low-slung sofa and sat beside him, watching carefully.
Three-Alpha looked around blearily, focusing on the Motherwell on the far wall. “I want to touch him,” he murmured.
“Like this?” Merrick moved closer and kissed the slightly parted lips, tasting them. Delicious, warm skin and sweet, drugged juice. He touched the tip of his tongue to Three-Alpha’s and moved it round the soft inner rim of his mouth, then gently captured his lower lip and sucked on it. Nikolai Luzhin had a scar on his upper lip; Three-Alpha’s was innocent of blemish. Both were powerfully seductive. “Like this?” he whispered again.
“Uh-huh.” Three-Alpha’s arms went round Merrick’s neck. “Do that again.”
Merrick kissed Three-Alpha slowly, thoroughly, his cock hardening more with every passing moment. Three-Alpha yielded to him, every movement languorous and naively enticing. He peeled off the tight white shirt and grazed the clean, pale skin of Three-Alpha’s shoulder with his teeth. He moved down, licking at the light film of sweat produced by the drug, and took a nipple into his mouth.
Three-Alpha moaned and clutched at Merrick’s hair, mussing it. “That feels good.”
“You like it?” Merrick slipped his hand over the growing hardness beneath the white trousers.
Three-Alpha arched upwards. “It’s nice.” His eyes were unfocused, his mouth open, his thighs spread widely apart. “Oh – what are you doing?“
“Helping you get more comfortable,” Merrick whispered. “Shh. Raise up a bit.” He slid down Three-Alpha’s trousers and underwear in one clean motion, then pried off his trainers to free his legs. Merrick sat back on his heels, momentarily ignoring his own straining erection, and drank in the sight of Luzhin Three-Alpha, naked and half-conscious on his sofa.
Magnificent.
He rose unsteadily and went into his adjoining bathroom, procuring a small bottle of lotion. When he returned to the sofa, Three-Alpha was lying full-length, awkwardly touching himself, his breath coming in sharp, rapid gasps. “No, no,” Merrick said, dropping to his knees. He took Three-Alpha’s hands in his and urged him up. “Let me touch you. It feels better that way.”
He bent his head and closed his mouth over Three-Alpha’s cock, provoking a hoarse cry. He sucked and licked until Three-Alpha was bucking helplessly, groaning aloud, then stopped, unfastened his own trousers, and poured lotion into one hand. He stroked himself a few times – he was ready, more than ready – then gently pushed Three-Alpha back onto the sofa. “Raise up again. Now slide down, closer to me. Good. Good.” Trembling, he pushed in, biting at his lower lip in an effort not to whimper. When he was buried to the hilt, he pulled back slightly, then pushed in again. Sweat beaded his brow. “Slow,” he whispered. “Slow.”
Three-Alpha clutched at the sleek black cushions of the couch and moaned.
“That’s it.” Merrick moved faster, thrusting harder and harder each time. He curled his hand round the agnate’s cock and tightened. Three-Alpha let out another cry and spilled onto Merrick’s hand. The tightening sensation around Merrick’s cock sent him over the edge, and he came with a muffled roar. Shaking, he held himself still for a few moments, then pulled out slowly. He gathered a pliant Three-Alpha into his arms and held his fingers close to the agnate’s parted lips. “Clean it up. Every drop. That’s it. Very nice.”

Three-Alpha blinked and sat up suddenly. “I’m sorry. I –“ He looked around uneasily. “I guess I fell asleep.”
Merrick smiled. “You did. I couldn’t bear to wake you, you looked so peaceful. But you’d better go to your own room now, don’t you think?”
“I guess so. I’m sorry about that.” Three-Alpha rose to his feet. A peculiar expression flickered in his eyes. “I feel a little weird.”
“You’re due for a physical checkup very soon. We’ll get you sorted out in no time. Good night, Three-Alpha. Please don’t forget what I told you about the proximity violations. Remember, we all have to follow the rules. That’s what makes society work.”
“Okay. Good night, Dr. Merrick.”

Merrick sat at his desk, contemplating three photographs. If there was a problem, it could be solved in short order. Sometimes it was necessary to compartmentalize. A wise man understood his own assets and failings, and dealt with them. And Merrick knew very well what he lacked.
Conscience.
But perhaps it was an asset after all, in his line of work. Who was to say?
