I love the pairing too. I agree that with the progression of the relationship, the situation becomes more precarious and they more vulnerable.
There's a part of me that is convinced that Nikolai is perhaps purer of heart than he believes himself to be. Not that he doesn't have his moments of ruthless expediency, obviously, but it feels like his central core is not thoroughly corrupted by his sordid life.
