Okay, upon further reflection, what I wanted to say is that I think you have Douglas just right. The characterization is perfect as far as the self-absorption goes. Though he is not without compassion and definitely feels his due measure of guilt, I think that what happened to Martin is well beyond what he could imagine. Although he is usually among the first to see the outcomes of things -- like a visit to the hospital -- and often has a dozen contingencies worked out, this time his luck seems to have failed him (and poor Martin!) and he's at a loss. I mean, he's not as sure of himself now. It just seems appropriate that once he's caught flat-footed by something this bad, he would lose a bit of his swagger, a bit of his faith in his previously unquestioned good luck. So it was nice to see Martin's fatalistic outlook be the rational choice for once. (Well, not nice, but right.) Though Martin's usual reality avoidance mechanism won't be doing him any favors, either.
Well done!
